The Perlmans own a villa outside of Moscazzano in Northern Italy, where they spend their summers and Hannukah. They invite a graduate student to spend six weeks with them over the summer to help Professor Perlman with his work. This summer - 1983 - the student in question is an American named Oliver. While there, Oliver largely associates with the Perlmans' seventeen year old son Elio and Elio's friends, the females among the group whose hearts are aflutter by Oliver's preppy good looks. Oliver, in fact, takes up casually with one of them, Chiara. Elio is an intellectual, but has no experience with girls as he is only now experimenting with his initial stage of manhood and masculinity. If not for Oliver, Elio probably would have chosen Chiara himself, and as such takes up with Marzia instead. Despite their social association and sleeping in adjoining rooms in the villa, Elio doesn't much like Oliver in thinking him too cocky and arrogant partly in that brash American sensibility. In turn, Oliver believes Elio is patronizing in his outward dislike of him. These outward behaviors mask the fact that there is a deep attraction between Elio and Oliver based largely on their admiration of the other's intellect. When they eventually admit that attraction late into Oliver's stay, Oliver is more reticent to act on those feelings in not wanting to ruin his own or Elio's life in still being in the closet, while Elio wants to experience all that sex and love are as he is in the flush of first real love. With Oliver and Elio's clandestine relationship, Elio has to figure out what to do about Marzia, he who may be aware or unaware of her own very deep feelings for him in also experiencing that flush of first love. Because I wanted you to know. I keep repeting that line. These two have classic good looks. A Mediterranean boy look and an American Midwestern look. Totally opposite on the spectrum but maybe that is endearing in itself. Also I think it is good to have Americans and Europeans making a movie because there are more things brought to the table, so to speak. This movie and game of thrones have a similar cast and director mix. All European and all American cast movies just do not rise to this level. That goes for the writers and directors also. Can anyone give other examples.

When Elio & Oliver (Timothee Chalamet & Armie Hammer) do actually get together thats when I started to find the film interesting. Its when I started to feel invested in these characters and feel emotions for them. My problem is it takes so long to get to that point. I dont know exactly how long it takes but it felt like half the movie had already gone by. And the first half is pretty boring. I didnt feel like much of anything was going on. Plus, I had a hard time connecting with the characters initially because they felt so pretentious. I mean who sits around and discusses the origins on the word "Apricot" And speaking of apricots, the director seems to have a hard on for them. So many shots of the apricot tree, or them eating apricots or literally has sex with one. Why? Its too bad because there was the potential there for me to really like this movie. I bought into their love story and Timothee Chalamet in particular is fantastic in it. Theres so much range in emotion just in the last scene next to the fireplace alone. And there was beautiful heartfelt moment between father and son after Oliver leaves. It was very poignant. I wanted the movie to be more like that. But it wasn't. And for that I feel like I cant give this movie any higher than a 6.

The movie had no need for forced obstacles as means for a more engaging or dramatic story line because the precise point of their story was the total immersion in one another, regardless of external forces. to add struggles with their sexuality- be that internal or external- would have taken away from their story. while that may have worked for moonlight, it would have been totally out-of-place here; this story is not one about sexuality, it's about an experience and the nuances within said experience. similarly, in god's own country, the story is about the two falling in love and the influence one has on the other; in GOC, though, they do end up having a falling out, which worked quite well for that story, but would feel distorted for the style and intentions of cmbyn. oliver's and elio's story carries its own weight and does not need pinpointed events of exposition to create its own sense of devastation, it does that quite well on its own.
